ENGL444: Written Communication Program Site Usability Test

ok. this video will be my usability test of the written communication program site and the first thing I do is to go ahead and they have a look around the site. written communication English language and literature department ok it would seem that I'm guessing this is the program in the English language and literature Department a specific program writing matters the undergraduate program the graduate program writing at emu program has a blog no faculty advisors nice video to watch and like how its brief it seems to focus on a lot of different media social media lots of different writing not just not just books periodicals newspapers essays writing is a lot more than you thought apparently it is that video certainly demonstrates that um cool i like that as a attention-grabbing brief video that doesn't require a whole lot of investment of my time um it looks like information about other programs and it would appear as though the links are the menu items over here aren't specific to written communication. that's interesting but yeah it looks like this page is specifically about communication department or program in that writing matters a description of the undergraduate program a description the graduate program in the blog for the program list of the faculty and advisors for the program contact information for their college or that apartment it's moving on let's hands are the first question find basic contact information for the program well I've noticed from the department site this is the English department contact information that's readily available um Oh and links to email advisors that's interesting. I click on a name in the Faculty listing and I get their profile with their contact information I look click on the same name under the advisors and I get a link to email them and then i click on thence name and graduate and I get their bio again. it's interesting that these four names i can email but i don't i don't get there by oh I don't know that confuses me I would expect I would expect these four links to act the same way that all the rest of these do and I also know from experience that that means male 2 links are can be confusing for people um. I'm gonna go ahead and say that it is somewhat easy to find contact information I don't see contact information for the department as a whole. I would just take a crap shoot here and click on a faculty member and contact that individual and hopefully that's the individual I need to get in touch with I would like to see something on here ah directed me to a specific person or individual or maybe just a a program specific email address find out more about the program that I'm interested in how easier difficult is that ok. more about the written specific written communication program undergraduate major and written communication offers three emphasis okay well let's find out about those let's click on this see what happens under program in written communication 30 credit our major rating studies professional writing technical communication catalogue links use information about the miner that's cool um all right well i'm interested in tecnico in technical communication tells me what it's for I'd like to see what classes are involved that's not immediately. I you see what classes are involved in the written communication program and I guess that's my best bet for finding out what classes are involved in the specific technical communication strand which click that link oh and once again I take into the catalog which is like starting all over again I would have hoped that by clicking on that link i would have been taken directly to the catalog page that lists that major I guess I have to click on majors minors this is frustrating it's like I'm duplicating my work all over again now I have to remember what major was I looking up Oh written communication okay let's scroll down this big long list of majors oh there's written communication oh and now I finally get the information I needed oh here are the courses in the technical communication strand okay now I get it but how frustrating is that that I have to duplicate a lot of work in order to get to this information and frankly you know I've drilled down to this point you know. I've cleared all the basic information they've gotten a more specific information I continue to drill down I go ahead and click on this link it opens up the catalog and I'm back to what's more or less a top page and I have to drill down all over again it's really frustrating again I think that unless I'm driven I'm gonna lose interest at this point. I'm gonna go ahead and say that finding information about the program of interest is not easy finding detailed information at least getting this far on getting their description of giving the description of the program and how it's you know how its divided into three different strands that part's simple um but to go further yeah frustrating none of those links take me directly to the catalog description of the written communication major they take me to the catalog itself and I have to navigate the catalog which is frustrating um find about find out info about the faculty and advisors let's go back to the landing page faculty and advisors okay well let's say let's just assume that that's my that's my first question when I come to the site. if. I look at the site and I see faculty over here hmm. if I admit I fine oriented myself to decide at all I might I might think that these are all faculty for the wit and written communication program and if I click on buy program I can see that's actually not the case just these people are involved in written communication but it would I have to sort my program to know that let's go back till my point is if I clicked on this site and my primary question was who's the faculty for the written communication program if I haven't scrolled down the first thing I see is this menu item for faculty I'm gonna go there and that takes me to a list of everybody if I scroll down to the bottom well there that's is simple to find here's a list of all the faculty for the specific program and then not already seen that I just click on it I get someone's bio page along with their contact information. I'm gonna say it's not overly easy it's not overly difficult um but it is a little misleading find out about the courses descriptions who teaches them when they're offered and again it's just the way that this page is layout laid out it falls in that pitfall where you've got this menu here on the side which is specific to the department not specific to the program I guess. i can click on this link or i could click on this link let's take care well that just takes me back to this page programme's I guess I'm forced to click on this link me and again what classes are offered again really frustrating even less usable I think then the department website because I don't have a list of the classes that are available all the links that are on here take me to write to the catalog and I've already stated a few times how frustrating it is that I have to navigate the catalog in addition to navigating this site. I'm going to go ahead and say that finding the programs is difficult how about events nothing on here about events let's go here no events at this time of course that's as experiences show and that's for the entire / department department not specific program events and it's disappointing that there's nothing listed on this page. I guess as far as the program go page goes this video is very interesting it's engaging its brief I appreciate that appreciate the descriptions I appreciate that this link tells me gives me tells me that the program is divided into three different options I appreciate that the faculty are listed down here and that they're these links take me to their profiles but it frustrates me that these are all linked to their email addresses whereas the rest of these take me to their profile pages it frustrates me that I don't have a list of courses available and what frustrates need the most is that to get any information about the classes or courses for this program I have to navigate the catalog. i would have to I'd have to say that the program site is less usable than the department site
