Usually we focus on all things college essays on this channel. However, today we're switching gears because I really want to make sure that you as juniors planning your college visits that you maximize that experience and you have that authentic, organic, one on one with a college that really will help you figure out and kind of iron out your college list. And then it'll help you elevate those college essays, especially why this college essay, the supplement.. it really does come back to the essays. Everything in life that's worthwhile takes more time than expected.. really think about what you're going to see, what you want to see, who you want to chat with. Are you going to be on a campus half day, full day, multiple days?. really make a plan, but then also have a plan B in case you encounter challenges or kind of delays in your schedule that you didn't account for.. make that plan and know exactly where you're going with this itinerary. Tip two, get involved in the process. Don't let your parents dictate the entire experience. And believe me, they will appreciate the fact that you're invested in this moment as well. Take time to figure out what's important to you socially.. are you a foodie? Then maybe pick three to five places you'll eat in and around campus. This is what you'll be doing on the weekends. Are you an outdoorsy type person? Do you want to experience some local exercise, hikes, trails, a yoga class?. help make that plan. that you are invested and that you see yourself living and learning and thriving in this community. Tip three, take time to explore the surrounding community.. this is kind of related. it's like 2.5, but attended a local museum if you love art. Attend a yoga class nearby, a gym. Do you have a farmer's market around?. really allow the surrounding community to be part of the campus. Don't just drive into a campus, take that tour that the school has for you and drive out. Really see what students are kind of engaging in in their every day. Tip four, get off the beaten path.. the campus tour is great, but it's like a brochure. It's going to be very polished, very rehearsed and this is the engineering building and this is the literature building.. you're going to learn a lot about what the school has to offer academically, but it is kind of stamped with a very rehearsed, polished approval from the college. You also want to kind of figure out what students are really doing behind the scenes and socially, which is great.. if there's a sporting event, sit down and just kind of see what the vibe is, what students are chatting kind of in the background, kind of eavesdrop. Don't get in trouble. Everything in life that's worthwhile takes more time than expected.. really think about what you're going to see, what you want to see, who you want to chat with. Are you going to be on a campus half day, full day, multiple days?. really make a plan, but then also have a plan B in case you encounter challenges or kind of delays in your schedule that you didn't account for.. make that plan and know exactly where you're going with this itinerary. Tip two, get involved in the process. Don't let your parents dictate the entire experience. And believe me, they will appreciate the fact that you're invested in this moment as well. Take time to figure out what's important to you socially.. are you a foodie? Then maybe pick three to five places you'll eat in and around campus. This is what you'll be doing on the weekends. Are you an outdoorsy type person? Do you want to experience some local exercise, hikes, trails, a yoga class?. help make that plan. that you are invested and that you see yourself living and learning and thriving in this community. Tip three, take time to explore the surrounding community.. this is kind of related. it's like 2.5, but attended a local museum if you love art. Attend a yoga class nearby, a gym. Do you have a farmer's market around?. really allow the surrounding community to be part of the campus. Don't just drive into a campus, take that tour that the school has for you and drive out. Really see what students are kind of engaging in in their every day. Tip four, get off the beaten path.. the campus tour is great, but it's like a brochure. It's going to be very polished, very rehearsed and this is the engineering building and this is the literature building.. you're going to learn a lot about what the school has to offer academically, but it is kind of stamped with a very rehearsed, polished approval from the college. You also want to kind of figure out what students are really doing behind the scenes and socially, which is great.. if there's a sporting event, sit down and just kind of see what the vibe is, what students are chatting kind of in the background, kind of eavesdrop. Don't get in trouble. Sit in class real quick if you can.. kind of get the vibe of the school, not only point A, point B, point C that the campus store has to offer.. here are a couple of pictures and videos from real college tours and the payoff when getting off that beaten path.. you'll see a picture from American, from Colombia, from UVA.
