I thought to myself what a better idea stuck in this quarantine you feel my childhood dream and making YouTube video I watched a lot of these videos starting the admissions process on college application process you all know how it is you on YouTube you're on the search for you. how I got into college name and you start to compare yourself to them start and they almost when they created a billion-dollar company and they went to Mars and all this stuff all this crazy stuff there the next Elon Musk Bill Gates baby and you start to feel really bad about your chances about getting into these schools whatever school it may be but this is not that type of video I promise you I'm a normal kid not special. just keep that in mind my name is Emilio I go to school in Orlando Florida visited Stanford on the summer of 2019 I went to California with my family and well super grateful for that because it really pushed me to try my hardest to apply to the school apply to Stanford there's absolutely beautiful campus though probably gonna put in some pictures for a year but is absolutely life-changing the campus I saw the people the students that were walking around no just just a whole environment I mean I have a strong interest in stem obviously Stanford's a very big stem school hoping to get a major in economics or math or computer science or electrical engineering something like that. I applied during the early decision around through the quest bridge program. I got my decision back in December it was the earliest decision for any Stanford applicants I actually did record myself getting my decision back from Sanford. as you can see it looked quite different than what I do now back when I got my decision I mean I mean look at the hair and the braces and just me but I was in my car because I was at a soccer practice and I told my coach I wasn't going to practice and I was super stressed and my car started recording myself because I mean that's what everybody does I kneeled down to go connect my phone I think because I like 2% look up on the refreshed page and I mean you can imagine what happens next I was in the IB program it's just a magnet program just like ap the bunch bunch bunch of bunch of bunch of useless useless work useless. it's just like like I'm another magnet program it's recognized internationally. they have different schools all around the world and it just. happens I went to schools my area that's why my GPA is later it is the time which I was applying cuz my grades are but um senioritis at its finest guys. three point nine eight unweighted GPA at the time I was applying and a five point two for weighted GPA I was ranked number nine out of about 850 860 students. I was technically in the top one percent because eight point five rounds to nine top nine like I said I was in the IB program it's two years of pre IB the two years of actual IB. the pre IB is weighted out of a 5.0 scale at my school and then the actual IB is weighted a 6.0 scale and AP classes are also later at a 6.0 scale. a freshman year had one AP class at a peak in the geography and a bunch of other IV pre IB classes that are waiting like honors and honors classes sophomore year I had AP World History that's my only AP and other like said pre high beam classes and honors classes junior year I had AP Calculus AP and AP English literature. those are my two AP classes and I had another set of actual IB classes because this is the last two years of the program. those ahead and bumps up to instead of previously IV signore add one AP class and did and then again like another set of IV classes prom got cancelled Corona as you can see where my schedules I didn't really take extremely extremely hard classes that like crushed me every single year but instead I focused my strengths which are at more math oriented science we're into rather than taking other classes that would have killed my GPA or killed my whole sanity if you can if you sell time trying to focus your schedule on your strengths highlight the classes and subjects they put in. that way it works in your favor in the end and you have more free time you're actually studying what you like to do or studying what you're interested in if you have time to do that everyone's favorite favorite favorite part scores test scores for my AP scores I got a three on AP human my freshman year I did not know what was going on for on ap world the next year my sophomore year I got a five on AP calc then I had a three on AP English literature. as you can tell definitely not the best scores in the world but the five really helped me out because it highlighted I was a math person a stem person not the best. don't feel bad if you don't have all fives because I definitely do not have all fives my IV score I did have one IV score my junior year and I was for IB support science. IB scores out of seven instead of AP scores that are five and I got a six of seven on the IV scale. I submitted that to Stanford as well and now for my SAT scores took the SAT three times I took it the first time on in March of my junior year which everyone takes and I scored pretty low I got a thirteen sixty went on the PSAT in the October of my junior year I got 1,400. I went down it's because I got really nervous I didn't know the timing of the tests at all i I just I choked really hard. over the summer I was like I'm definitely not not having this score I just wasn't satisfied with it person is. I'm gonna have studied books did a couple online stuff websites whatever and I studied for about a month and I got a 1450 in August going into my senior year I took it the last time October of my senior year when everybody else takes it everybody takes at the same time it caused a school administered one and that one knows my highest square at fifteen ten the score that I ended up some inning was the 1415 not the 15 10 because the 50-ton came after I submitted my quest page application which is how I applied I did take the AC T twice I took it the first time and I got 831 in September of my senior year those first time I ever took it I absolutely hated it but I was like whatever I'm gonna take it again in October of my senior year I took it again and I got a 32 it wasn't the same level as my SAT score my c2 scores were a little bit lower. I just decided I prefer the city overall anyways. screw the city's a science section you don't have the best AP scores and then I have the best SAT score it felt within the the range of Stanford that was my goal. I aim for the middle 50% and try to like fit within either the mid or high range of the of the middle 50 but as long as you fall within the middle 50% you don't have to stress that much I just try and get within that range and then after that just just give it up manage this it's just a test I think the day the admissions officers know that you might not be a good test taker you might not be the best bubbler but it's it's just the test. they're not gonna put too much stress on it and they've been in for me I mean that goes with all my tests but they it's it's just a test and I know that an example of my really bad test scores or my subject tests I got a 670 in math to the math to Sunday test and I got a 614 in chemistry well I just thought I had breeze through it but you do need to practice please take my advice take practice tests at least once because they do help a lot and that probably would have helped me on the ECT as well like I said Tesla and everything I didn't submit those scores and I didn't submit any subjects us and I still managed to get by. don't stress if you get about score just don't submit it just don't sweat it you'll be fine trust me. I do feel like my extracurriculars were a big part of my application if not the strongest part because I did do quite a bit over different periods of time. it allowed me to get a little more meat on lap. I did play soccer for quite some time that's my first and biggest I could curricular. I started when I was about 5 years old playing recreational and then I've looked up to competitive I when I was about 7 years old and I. I played soccer for about 13 years and then I moved on the off seasons I played varsity for four years since freshman year I didn't have any leadership positions I wasn't captain on my school team but on my club team I was captain for a lot of the time on the various teams that I played on next I had SGA. I see I did for two years my software engineer I was just a member than I have any cabinet positions leadership positions I was just a member and I just described what I did planning like school spirit events like homecoming and prom and things like that I just helped out with that I did tutoring personal tutoring on the side. I did start a sort of Club class kind of thing at my school I was like a tutoring session I'll bring in the books I told you I got to practice for these tests and just put questions on the board to go over them with whoever showed up sometimes there was two students three students sometimes there was 15 students. I did do some private tutoring as well um but it wasn't for any money and what I wasn't getting paid it was just for whoever asked me for help I would go help them out either after school or during no I would visit them at their house and go ahead and help them out for an hour - I've been working since I was 16 years old. the week of my 16th birthday I got my first job at Old Navy did have a lot of work experience that I put on my application and that was something that not a lot of people had at my school. I feel like it made me stand out. I was on my school's math team for two years we had a competitive math team that was started by my AP calculus teacher in my junior year on my Conklin teacher shout out mystery eh yeah this on YouTube channel. I was on that team I was a co-captain for both years and we went to various competitions or go it smacked against all these private schools. but either way it was fun it was very fun we would have group and individual competitions and it was just a way to practice and advance my math skills and I really enjoyed it actually made me love math my senior year actually added to extracurriculars I had eco club our ecology Club at my school I started my own personal and project if you have the chance if you have sort of passion sort of skill that you can implement into a personal project I highly suggest doing that because it makes you stand out on your application from other students because you use your skills that you've developed in a way to solve a problem and not a lot of people do that. what I did is I have a passion for drifting and finding clothes and Goodwill's for like 90 percent off retail fast fashion stores I took all of this clothes that I had that I didn't really wear from thrifting because I do get a lot of clothes and instead of donating back into the goodwill and the Salvation Army and all that Hollister stores I went ahead and set up a shop at my school let's go ahead and sell the clothes I also collected clothes from other from other students I had a little donation set up or if you had clothes that you wanted to bring in or anything at that matter I'm gonna take it sell them again to students all that money would be donate to ecology club. this was like his some of my participation at ecology Club but I started this from the ground up or with your extracurriculars try not to be boring let's try not to do every single club try not to do all the club. everybody does every club that everybody does if you think about it everyone's gonna be applying to these schools and they all have those clubs. if you are gonna be a part of those clubs try to get a leadership position and try to make a difference even if you don't have a leadership position you can still make a difference try to start a project I didn't have any leadership position in ecology club but I still had the chance to make a difference because I started my own personal project first Stanford particularly they have a really big entrepreneur entrepreneur entrepreneur mindset a lot of students turn out to own these big companies become CEOs. I felt that me starting my own thrift store on campus showed that I would fit within the Stanford community and how about like contribute in some way shape or form I did have a number of awards throughout my four years in high school my first award was I shouldn't have freshman year I got the Rookie of the Year for the soccer team. this was the only award that I got through soccer my sophomore year I got a German scholarship finalist award I put that down I was in national Germany exam and I scored in the top 10% of the country and then I moved to face to the application and I got to the finalist phase where the girl who sat next to me during class actually got the scholarship and. V shoutout Sara I still hate you my junior year I got more Awards I got a silver on the exam this time. I didn't apply for the scholarship because I didn't qualify for it this time but I did get silver. that was a top 20% I got the quest bridge college prep Scholar I was also a Hispanic scholarship fund Youth Leadership Institute participant my senior year I got one more award but this was after the time that I applied I was the district representative for the US Presidential Scholars program. I was like one out of fifty thousand students in my district that were selected for the program I wasn't the Nobel Prize winning student at age five was just normal I got a couple Awards and I said you know in the end your stats are just numbers and words on a paper like your actual computers are just words in titles and these positions are just titles and these scores are just numbers or GPA or just numbers but your your essays and your personality and what you support them with actually make these come alive into the person that you are have your own like edge to make you stand out like have your own interests on mine was math and business. because I want to go into economics. it makes sense for me to like math and business try and be well-rounded student don't get me wrong get good grades or try to get good grades in all subjects try to be well but have an edge have an interest have your passions shine through the rest of the subjects. that way that they remember you guys something. that in your application be like oh I am a English person or a math person or a theatre person or a swimmer or something anything it can be but just try and get a theme to your application and keep that consistent and especially highlighted in your essays be yourself because they can see really see through if you're trying to be fake on your application or if you're trying to be this Elon Musk Jeff Bezos babies no wonder people do exist college admissions officers do realize that you are a normal eighteen seventeen year old student high school student normal people get in I'm very very very normal like that spongebob episode where he turned on one literally I definitely wasn't the best I'm not even the best of my school don't be intimidated just relax and try your best don't slack off on your applications cuz then you might regret it all right. that's it thank you. much for watching I will see you guys next
