HOW TO WRITE A FIRST CLASS UNIVERSITY ESSAY
so getting a first-class mark in an University essay hi guys today I thought I'd share with you my top tips to getting a first-class mark in a university essay it's worth pointing out that I study a scientific subject. these will be more oriented towards that but these are also applicable to many different degree types. I mentioned that last year I fortunately received some first-class marks and I received a lot of those in the essays that I wrote and I've got to be honest with you I definitely didn't start that way but I feel like once you achieve a first-class result it's much easier to get another one and you kind of learn the tips and tricks that are going to help push up your grade and I want to share those thing I want to say is do not be demoralized if you start off by getting quite low grades at university because that is totally normal and you'll get your grades and you'll think oh my gosh I failed this is. bad but it really takes a while to learn the things that are going to boost your grade up I hope that my tips will hopefully speed up that process my first tip is probably a really obvious one but I thought I'd reiterate it anyway because it is. important and that is read the question properly no matter how fantastically written or detailed your essay is you're not going to be achieving those high marks unless you address the question directly read the question and then plan out your essay if you're not writing this in exam conditions create a nice detailed a full plan of exactly what you're going to include and maybe some papers that you're going to reference and if you are in exam conditions I would suggest spending maybe five minutes on it and just writing a really quick bullet point list of what you're going to do maybe you could write out the subheadings you're planning on using in your essay as I'll talk about later on and then just bullet point the points you want to cut under that but just have a plan in your head. that you know when your mind goes blank you at least have a slight train of thought to go on if you panic in exams like I sometimes do. what I suggest doing is really in the question and then underlying the key points that you need to discuss in your essay whether that's a certain topic or an dear or a specific bacteria you need to make sure that you're directly addressing that question and then you can Pat it out with extra info around that but make sure that is your call I've heard of. many people and you just always say to us that some people write fantastic essays but under exam conditions they just go on a bit of a tangent and they don't address the question properly and no matter how factually accurate your essay is you just can't achieve that top band my second tip is more for the scientific essays but that is don't worry about your intro being fancy I think it's often drilled in you at sick form when you're studying something like English literature as I was in my first year that you need to have quite an elaborate gripping introduction with a scientific essay is quite different we're not really bothered about how poetically written the essay is we just want to know exactly what you're going to talk about. your intro should be really short four or five lines and it should just introduce the topics you're going to talk about and maybe some discussions that are going to be had and that is it do not worry about your introduction because Marcus eight was they just don't really care about the intro as long as it sets the pace for the rest of the essay my next tip that's applicable to university essays specifically and maybe not. much those that you will have written before and that is the use of subheadings is really important to structure your essay properly we've been constantly told at university that to get the marked for a good structure you really need to be having subheadings. that the market can know exactly what that paragraph is going to be about and that feels quite weird to write I felt when I first started doing it it just feels a bit abnormal to write subheadings in the middle of an essay but you can literally finish your paragraph write your subheading underline it and then write your next paragraph and that just helps the examiner to know that you're aware of subheading program conclusion whatever however long it's going to be and yeah that just helps me also just organize my thoughts in my brain because if I see a subheading I know right this is exactly what I'm going to talk about the next tip I have specifically for scientific university essays is again one that might feel a bit abnormal when you start doing it but soon it will just become common practice and that is that you need to include diagrams I know it can be such a pain because when you're under exam conditions diagrams sometimes just seem a little bit of a waste of time and you know you might be struggling how to illustrate exactly what you're trying to say but when it comes to diagrams it literally is a tick box exercise I mean you do get graded to a certain extent on the quality of your diagram but if they don't see a diagram you're literally just going to lose marks obviously you check with your University course but for my course which is pretty much biomedical sciences if you don't have a diagram you just get marks dogged. it's well if even in 30 seconds just chucking something in there. that they can see you attempted to meet that marking criteria and a note to say about diagrams is that they should be headed just like a subheading just to say figure 1.1 diagram to illustrate and then just underline them and then in your text you need to reference this diagram because diagrams should say what you haven't written. you're not wasting time writing about it and then drawing a diagram. you could say for example the krebs cycle as illustrated in Figure 1.1 and then half below that figure 1.1 diagram illustrating the krebs cycle and that way you're not having to explain the cycle you're illustrating it and it's clearly referenced. that the examiner can see where that ties in to the text. the next thing I want to talk about is probably one of the most important things and that is reading source material and annotating it. this is where I really want to talk to you guys about this fantastic bit of software called PDF element Express. I personally have been downloading all the papers that I read online to put in my essay in PDF format because I don't have Microsoft Word. they tend to open up as a PDF and I often struggle because I'm someone that really likes to annotate but you can't annotate on a normal PDF. I've ended up having to waste a lot of ink printing out PDFs and then highlighting them manually this bit of software is absolutely amazing and I'm obsessed with it and I cannot wait to use it more in my neck université yeah. it's basically a software way you can annotate PDFs you can highlight them you can edit text add text manipulate pictures and I think it's just an excellent bit of software to help you create really succinct notes about the papers like you're reading I think this is a great bit of software because you can look at the bits you've highlighted the bit. you consider it important and then you can integrate them into your essay which is way easier than printing them off and wasting. much ink like I did last year. I thought I'd show you some of my favorite features that I've been exploring on PDF element Express. first of all I'm just saving a PDF file to my computer just. that I can open it in PDF element Express and just like that I've imported it. easy. quick. one of my personal favorite tools is the highlight tool because as I said I've wasted a lot of paper highlighting. it's really nice to be able to do it online. I just use this tool and just like that I'm highlighting the key information and then it makes it really quick to look back on for essays and things I wanted to include another feature I love is the sticky note feature because it allows you to just leave notes by bits of information that maybe you want to research further another tool that I found particularly useful is the text comment tool and pretty self-explanatory it just allows you to annotate the PDF document with whatever you'd like and then finally another tool that I found really awesome was the image editor tool. this basically allows you to delete images in the document that you don't really find very useful and as you saw I just downloaded the structure of vancomycin. what I can do is just get rid of all these pictures that I don't really need and then just insert the one that I've saved online just allows for you to collate the information that you find the most useful on the PDF document ready to write whatever essay you're going to be writing my next tip is the one that's really going to take your essay from a to one level. at the 60% mark to the first class level at 70% mark and that is to draw wider connection you're always told in university that you need to read quite widely and I think to an extent that is true in order to get a little top marks you're going to have to go beyond the source material they've given you in the lectures and read quite widely use databases such as NCBI PubMed and just explore some different perspectives on different topics explore the latest research make sure in your essay that you're integrating quite solidified research and then maybe add in a bit of upcoming research that you've read about but connections don't have to be drawn from wider source material what I mean by this is you can also draw connections from lectures you've had in other subjects. for example I might have got given a lecture in microbiology about a certain bacteria and then I might have got given a lecture in biochemistry about antibiotic resistance to this bacteria and how that poses problems to the healthcare systems. really want to talk to you guys about this fantastic bit of software called PDF element Express. I personally have been downloading all the papers that I read online to put in my essay in PDF format because I don't have Microsoft Word. they tend to open up as a PDF and I often struggle because I'm someone that really likes to annotate but you can't annotate on a normal PDF. I've ended up having to waste a lot of ink printing out PDFs and then highlighting them manually this bit of software is absolutely amazing and I'm obsessed with it and I cannot wait to use it more in my neck université yeah. it's basically a software way you can annotate PDFs you can highlight them you can edit text add text manipulate pictures and I think it's just an excellent bit of software to help you create really succinct notes about the papers like you're reading I think this is a great bit of software because you can look at the bits you've highlighted the bit. you consider it important and then you can integrate them into your essay which is way easier than printing them off and wasting. much ink like I did last year. I thought I'd show you some of my favorite features that I've been exploring on PDF element Express. first of all I'm just saving a PDF file to my computer just. that I can open it in PDF element Express and just like that I've imported it. easy. quick. one of my personal favorite tools is the highlight tool because as I said I've wasted a lot of paper highlighting. it's really nice to be able to do it online. I just use this tool and just like that I'm highlighting the key information and then it makes it really quick to look back on for essays and things I wanted to include another feature I love is the sticky note feature because it allows you to just leave notes by bits of information that maybe you want to research further another tool that I found particularly useful is the text comment tool and pretty self-explanatory it just allows you to annotate the PDF document with whatever you'd like and then finally another tool that I found really awesome was the image editor tool. this basically allows you to delete images in the document that you don't really find very useful and as you saw I just downloaded the structure of vancomycin. what I can do is just get rid of all these pictures that I don't really need and then just insert the one that I've saved online just allows for you to collate the information that you find the most useful on the PDF document ready to write whatever essay you're going to be writing my next tip is the one that's really going to take your essay from a to one level. at the 60% mark to the first class level at 70% mark and that is to draw wider connection you're always told in university that you need to read quite widely and I think to an extent that is true in order to get a little top marks you're going to have to go beyond the source material they've given you in the lectures and read quite widely use databases such as NCBI PubMed and just explore some different perspectives on different topics explore the latest research make sure in your essay that you're integrating quite solidified research and then maybe add in a bit of upcoming research that you've read about but connections don't have to be drawn from wider source material what I mean by this is you can also draw connections from lectures you've had in other subjects. for example I might have got given a lecture in microbiology about a certain bacteria and then I might have got given a lecture in biochemistry about antibiotic resistance to this bacteria and how that poses problems to the healthcare systems. HOW TO WRITE A FIRST CLASS UNIVERSITY ESSAY
so getting a first-class mark in an University essay hi guys today I thought I'd share with you my top tips to getting a first-class mark in a university essay it's worth pointing out that I study a scientific subject. these will be more oriented towards that but these are also applicable to many different degree types. I mentioned that last year I fortunately received some first-class marks and I received a lot of those in the essays that I wrote and I've got to be honest with you I definitely didn't start that way but I feel like once you achieve a first-class result it's much easier to get another one and you kind of learn the tips and tricks that are going to help push up your grade and I want to share those thing I want to say is do not be demoralized if you start off by getting quite low grades at university because that is totally normal and you'll get your grades and you'll think oh my gosh I failed this is. bad but it really takes a while to learn the things that are going to boost your grade up I hope that my tips will hopefully speed up that process my first tip is probably a really obvious one but I thought I'd reiterate it anyway because it is. important and that is read the question properly no matter how fantastically written or detailed your essay is you're not going to be achieving those high marks unless you address the question directly read the question and then plan out your essay if you're not writing this in exam conditions create a nice detailed a full plan of exactly what you're going to include and maybe some papers that you're going to reference and if you are in exam conditions I would suggest spending maybe five minutes on it and just writing a really quick bullet point list of what you're going to do maybe you could write out the subheadings you're planning on using in your essay as I'll talk about later on and then just bullet point the points you want to cut under that but just have a plan in your head. that you know when your mind goes blank you at least have a slight train of thought to go on if you panic in exams like I sometimes do. what I suggest doing is really in the question and then underlying the key points that you need to discuss in your essay whether that's a certain topic or an dear or a specific bacteria you need to make sure that you're directly addressing that question and then you can Pat it out with extra info around that but make sure that is your call I've heard of. many people and you just always say to us that some people write fantastic essays but under exam conditions they just go on a bit of a tangent and they don't address the question properly and no matter how factually accurate your essay is you just can't achieve that top band my second tip is more for the scientific essays but that is don't worry about your intro being fancy I think it's often drilled in you at sick form when you're studying something like English literature as I was in my first year that you need to have quite an elaborate gripping introduction with a scientific essay is quite different we're not really bothered about how poetically written the essay is we just want to know exactly what you're going to talk about. your intro should be really short four or five lines and it should just introduce the topics you're going to talk about and maybe some discussions that are going to be had and that is it do not worry about your introduction because Marcus eight was they just don't really care about the intro as long as it sets the pace for the rest of the essay my next tip that's applicable to university essays specifically and maybe not. much those that you will have written before and that is the use of subheadings is really important to structure your essay properly we've been constantly told at university that to get the marked for a good structure you really need to be having subheadings. that the market can know exactly what that paragraph is going to be about and that feels quite weird to write I felt when I first started doing it it just feels a bit abnormal to write subheadings in the middle of an essay but you can literally finish your paragraph write your subheading underline it and then write your next paragraph and that just helps the examiner to know that you're aware of exactly what you're going to talk about and yeah it just gives a really succinct structure. what I tend to do is I write my introduction then I do a subheading paragraph subheading paragraph subheading program conclusion whatever however long it's going to be and yeah that just helps me also just organize my thoughts in my brain because if I see a subheading I know right this is exactly what I'm going to talk about the next tip I have specifically for scientific university essays is again one that might feel a bit abnormal when you start doing it but soon it will just become common practice and that is that you need to include diagrams I know it can be such a pain because when you're under exam conditions diagrams sometimes just seem a little bit of a waste of time and you know you might be struggling how to illustrate exactly what you're trying to say but when it comes to diagrams it literally is a tick box exercise I mean you do get graded to a certain extent on the quality of your diagram but if they don't see a diagram you're literally just going to lose marks obviously you check with your University course but for my course which is pretty much biomedical sciences if you don't have a diagram you just get marks dogged. it's well if even in 30 seconds just chucking something in there. that they can see you attempted to meet that marking criteria and a note to say about diagrams is that they should be headed just like a subheading just to say figure 1.1 diagram to illustrate and then just underline them and then in your text you need to reference this diagram because diagrams should say what you haven't written. you're not wasting time writing about it and then drawing a diagram. you could say for example the krebs cycle as illustrated in Figure 1.1 and then half below that figure 1.1 diagram illustrating the krebs cycle and that way you're not having to explain the cycle you're illustrating it and it's clearly referenced. that the examiner can see where that ties in to the text. the next thing I want to talk about is probably one of the most important things and that is reading source material and annotating it. this is where I really want to talk to you guys about this fantastic bit of software called PDF element Express. I personally have been downloading all the papers that I read online to put in my essay in PDF format because I don't have Microsoft Word. they tend to open up as a PDF and I often struggle because I'm someone that really likes to annotate but you can't annotate on a normal PDF. I've ended up having to waste a lot of ink printing out PDFs and then highlighting them manually this bit of software is absolutely amazing and I'm obsessed with it and I cannot wait to use it more in my neck université yeah. it's basically a software way you can annotate PDFs you can highlight them you can edit text add text manipulate pictures and I think it's just an excellent bit of software to help you create really succinct notes about the papers like you're reading I think this is a great bit of software because you can look at the bits you've highlighted the bit. you consider it important and then you can integrate them into your essay which is way easier than printing them off and wasting. much ink like I did last year. I thought I'd show you some of my favorite features that I've been exploring on PDF element Express. first of all I'm just saving a PDF file to my computer just. that I can open it in PDF element Express and just like that I've imported it. easy. quick. one of my personal favorite tools is the highlight tool because as I said I've wasted a lot of paper highlighting. it's really nice to be able to do it online. I just use this tool and just like that I'm highlighting the key information and then it makes it really quick to look back on for essays and things I wanted to include another feature I love is the sticky note feature because it allows you to just leave notes by bits of information that maybe you want to research further another tool that I found particularly useful is the text comment tool and pretty self-explanatory it just allows you to annotate the PDF document with whatever you'd like and then finally another tool that I found really awesome was the image editor tool. this basically allows you to delete images in the document that you don't really find very useful and as you saw I just downloaded the structure of vancomycin. what I can do is just get rid of all these pictures that I don't really need and then just insert the one that I've saved online just allows for you to collate the information that you find the most useful on the PDF document ready to write whatever essay you're going to be writing my next tip is the one that's really going to take your essay from a to one level. at the 60% mark to the first class level at 70% mark and that is to draw wider connection you're always told in university that you need to read quite widely and I think to an extent that is true in order to get a little top marks you're going to have to go beyond the source material they've given you in the lectures and read quite widely use databases such as NCBI PubMed and just explore some different perspectives on different topics explore the latest research make sure in your essay that you're integrating quite solidified research and then maybe add in a bit of upcoming research that you've read about but connections don't have to be drawn from wider source material what I mean by this is you can also draw connections from lectures you've had in other subjects. for example I might have got given a lecture in microbiology about a certain bacteria and then I might have got given a lecture in biochemistry about antibiotic resistance to this bacteria and how that poses problems to the healthcare systems.
